Donn Devita “Grouper” Mixed Media on Masonite

$800.00

Heavily textured ‘grouper’ in gesso with oil on masonite by Donn Devita (b. 1931 New York – d. 2010).
Devita, perhaps most revered for his animal studies, received his BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design and his MA from Columbia University. His illustrations were extensively published alongside know works of literature, and he earned countless commissions from design and architectural firms. He produced works from his New York City studio before relocating to Cape Cod, MA (this example, ca. 1970s, was from his NYC body of work).
This work marries whimsy of subject matter with proficiency of technique and understanding of materials/composition.
Masonite panel is mounted to a raffia-lined board, which shows wear consistent with age (bumps in places where the material is not taut). Additionally, there is wear to the frame, as shown.
