Vintage Jo Mead Painted Composite Pretzel and Crown Mirrored Bakery Trade Sign
Pretzel and crown with cross trade sign mirror circa 1960s by Jo (Josephine) Mead, a trailblazer of female design entrepreneurship whose eponymous ‘Jo Mead Designs’ began in Illinois in the 1940s and employed multiple artists to reproduce important antique decorative objects to make them widely available at a reasonable price point.
In this case, a familiar English bakers trade sign bearing the pretzel with crown motif has been refashioned as a mirror.
The composite frame was mold casted gold leafed and later hand painted with red and green crown details.
Though many of Jo Mead’s designs were mass produced, this piece is a lesser seen example in excellent, original condition with warm patina to the paint and a few small spots to the mirror glass itself. Only one other significantly smaller example in distressed condition has been identified.
Signed “Jo Mead” to the reverse.
