Vintage Hand-Carved and Painted Blackbird by Carleton Garrett
Hand-carved and painted blackbird sculpture supported by wire feet by Carlton Elonzo Garrett (1900-1992, USA).
Known for using only a drill press, band saw, and pocketknife to make his sculptures, Garrett managed to create impressive, ornate figural scenes (sometimes involving dozens of handmade characters) using only modest materials.
This example (ca. 1970s) is one of many birds he created throughout his career, far less involved than his notable, larger tableaus, yet equally charming and revealing of his skill.
Excellent, vintage condition with only light oxidation to the metal feet.
Signed “CARLTON” to the underside of the tail.
