Set of 1940s Hard Wood African Lobi Stools with Carved and Pyrogravure Details
Two hand carved hardwood stools with pyrographic decoration from the Sikire Kambire School of the Gaoua region of Burkina Faso (Lobi People, circa 1947). Composed of four legs supported by a square base with seats adorned at each end with two antelope heads and two human heads, respectively. Natural patina present, loss to one of the antlers, as shown. Overall, remarkable condition for their age and history. (In the last four years alone, they have been transported from France to London to New York.)
Most recently acquired at a Louviers (Normandy) Auction House in 2015 and evaluated by Bruno Frey, an expert in the field. Provenance available upon request.
