Nina Winkel Mixed Metal ‘Dancing Girls’ Sculpture

Copper and bronze mixed metal ‘dancing girls’ sculpture on wooden board by German-American sculptor, Nina Koch Winkel (b. 1905, d. 1990). This intricate, detailed work required advanced welding / soldering and metal sculpting techniques. Patinated metal, crude by design; no significant wear to note. Notes about the artist: Nina Winkel fled the Nazis in 1942 and moved to NY from Germany. She was the first woman in NYC to get a welder’s license, and in 1959 she moved from working in clay to creating welded copper sculptures. Exhibitions included the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Metropolitan Museum and the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters.
